Testing for coronavirus is now widely available across Australia.

If you are experiencing cold or flu symptoms, arrange a test by calling your doctor or contact the Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080.

The federal government’s coronavirus tracing app COVIDSafe is available for download from your phone’s app store.

It’s unclear exactly how contagious the COVID-19 is.

It appears to spread from person to person among those in close contact.

It may be spread by respiratory droplets released when someone with the virus coughs or sneezes – may also be spread if a person touches a surface with the virus on it and then touches his or her mouth, nose or eyes.

With these circumstances, the best way to preventive action is to avoid being exposed to the virus.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water. Wash them for at least 20 seconds. If there’s no soap and water, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Viruses that cause colds can enter your body this way and make you sick
  • Stay away from people who are sick. Sick people can spread viruses through close contact with others.

If you have serious symptoms such as difficulty breathing or experiencing cold or flu symptoms, arrange a test by calling your doctor or contact the Coronavirus Health Information Hotline on 1800 020 080.

Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Coughing
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue, and
  • Shortness of breath
