Porcelain veneers are one type of dental veneer. A porcelain veneer is a thin shell of dental porcelain bonded to the visible front surface of a tooth. Veneers are used to change the colour, shape, size or alignment of teeth that are discoloured, chipped, worn or unevenly spaced.
To fit a veneer, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the front of the tooth so the veneer sits flush and looks natural rather than bulky. A tooth prepared for a veneer will usually require ongoing coverage with a veneer or crown, because the removed enamel does not grow back.
Veneers are a cosmetic treatment. They do not treat decay, gum disease or bite problems, and any of those conditions need to be dealt with before veneers can be considered.

Many people return to normal activities and work the same day. There is no general anaesthetic and no surgical recovery period, but there are things to expect and your experience may differ.
Temporary veneers are commonly fitted after preparation while the permanent veneers are being made. Temporaries are more fragile than the final veneers and can come loose.
Expect sensitivity to hot, cold and pressure during the temporary phase and for a period after fitting.
Your bite may feel different for one to two weeks while you adjust. Sometimes a small adjustment appointment is needed.
Avoid hard and sticky foods while wearing temporaries, and take care with them long term.
If you grind your teeth at night, a night guard is usually recommended to protect your veneers. This is an additional cost.

We use digital smile design in the clinic to plan the shape, length and proportion of the veneers with you before any tooth preparation begins. This is a planning discussion with your dentist, not a prediction of your final result.
A thin layer of enamel is removed under local anaesthetic and detailed measurements are taken. Shade is selected with you. Temporary veneers are fitted where required. The 50 per cent deposit is due at this visit.
Your veneers are made by our dental technicians in our own laboratory, working from the measurements and shade taken at your preparation visit.

Neither option is better in every case. Porcelain suits people who want a longer-lasting result and are comfortable with enamel removal. Composite suits people who want a lower upfront cost, a faster result, or a more conservative approach to their natural teeth.

These two treatments solve different problems. Invisalign moves your natural teeth into a new position using clear removable aligners. Nothing is removed from the tooth, and the change is to alignment and bite.
Veneers change the appearance of the tooth surface. They do not move teeth or correct a bite problem, they involve removing enamel, and they cannot be undone.
If your main concern is crooked or crowded teeth, orthodontic treatment is usually the more conservative option and we will say so. If your concern is colour, shape, chips or wear on teeth that are otherwise well positioned, veneers may suit you better. Veneers are usually not the right starting point if you have untreated decay or gum disease, very little remaining enamel, heavy grinding or clenching that has not been managed, or teeth that are substantially out of position. In those situations we will explain what needs to happen first, or recommend a different treatment.

Your veneers are made from dental porcelain. The material is chosen for the specific case, because the right choice depends on how much tooth structure is being covered, how much light needs to pass through the veneer and how strong it needs to be in your bite.
Shade is planned with you rather than picked for you. We match against your surrounding natural teeth in the room, note the shade in your record and pass it to the technician directly. If you are planning to whiten your natural teeth, that has to happen before the shade is chosen, because porcelain cannot be lightened afterwards.
Translucency matters as much as colour. Natural enamel is not a flat block of one shade, so a veneer that is opaque can read as artificial even when the colour is correct. The technician builds translucency and surface texture into the veneer to sit alongside your own teeth rather than stand out from them.
You will see and approve the shade before the veneers are bonded.

Fitting a porcelain veneer permanently alters the tooth because a layer of enamel is removed. This does not mean every prepared tooth develops a problem, but the tooth will require ongoing restoration, monitoring and future veneer or crown replacement.
