Dental Implants in Warner Lakes: Should You Shop Around?
But you may also have noted how expensive they seem to be.
At Warner Lakes Dental, we tell our patients that while implants may seem expensive, over time they turn out to be quite economical, and they are also the optimal dental solution to missing teeth.
Let’s take a look!
Dental Implants vs. Other Options
There are two primary alternatives to implants, bridges and dentures. Each may have a role in tooth-replacement, but neither is as complete a solution as implants.
Dental bridges. Bridges are just what they suggest, a ‘bridge’ over a missing tooth, supported by the teeth on both sides.
Unfortunately, bridges usually need the teeth on either side of the gap to shaved down and fit with crowns that support the bridge.
Dental bridges ride above the gums, leaving the gums and bone underneath to deteriorate from lack of stimulation. Bridges also leave a convenient spot for bacteria, plaque, and tartar
Dentures. Traditional dentures can replace multiple missing teeth to entirely missing teeth.
They support facial muscles and restore the structure of your smile, but with no underlying support, the gums and jawbone deteriorate due to lack of stimulation from tooth roots.
Receding gums, bone loss, and face shape degeneration are common results of this.
Dentures come with other disadvantages:
- Irritated gums
- Sliding and slipping
- Difficulty speaking
- Difficulty chewing
- Annoying sucking or clicking noises
- Reduced food taste
Implants avoid these problems – they stimulate gums, make no noise, are secure in place, easily cleaned, avoid bone-loss, help the gums stay healthy, and support the face.
This means they save you from many hours of additional treatment in the future, and unlike dentures and bridges, rarely need replacement!
Dentures and bridges also have hidden costs that come clearer as time goes by.
Dentures require special maintenance and cleaning – cleansers, adhesives, carrying cases. You might be surprised at how much it adds up over the years.
Dentures and bridges can also become worn, damaged, or broken. Bridges have a lifespan of five to fifteen years, while dentures clock in between five and ten years.
Thus, the cost of replacement needs to be factored in. Dentures may need to be relined, adjusted, or repaired before they reach replacement.
Dental implants require no care beyond your normal oral hygiene. They’re also permanent; thus won’t need to be repaired or replaced except in very unusual cases.
Taking all maintenance, repair, and replacement costs into account, and for a lifetime, dental implants are often the most cost-effective option.
Should I Price-Shop Between Dental Practices?
At Warner Lakes Dental we know your money is important, but we also know that dental implants are something like an investment – the money you pay now will pay off in the future. So focusing only on price can end up being a bad strategy.
Here are a couple of things to think about.
Beware of high or low extremes. Be suspicious of extremely high or low implant costs. Inexpensive prices might mean the dentist focuses on volume rather than quality.
More expensive procedures may have inflated prices. Look for average market prices to determine if a practice is charging you a fair amount.
Also, realise that no two implants are precisely the same and they sometimes require supporting treatments (e.g. bone implantation). Your dentist should be able to clearly explain to you why an estimate for a dental implant is the amount it is.
Check with your insurance. Some of the cost for treatment will likely come out of your pocket, but more and more insurance policies are offering coverage for tooth replacement.
Be sure to check with your insurance provider to see what they might cover. Your dental office may be able to help you with this.
Choose a dentist you trust. This is very important. Your dentist needs to be experienced, skilled, and compassionate. You want your implants to be a permanent and complete – restoring your smile, bite, and dental health for a lifetime!
